A close view of how a peptide can engage a cell-surface receptor.
A physical interaction
The GLP-1 receptor is a class B G-protein-coupled receptor. A crystal-structure study captured it bound to a peptide agonist, giving researchers a model of contacts between the ligand and receptor. Structural information helps generate hypotheses about which molecular features influence recognition.
Structure is one piece
A static structure does not establish the complete cellular response, long-term behaviour or a clinical outcome. Those questions require functional and other studies. Even closely related peptide agonists can differ in signalling, so evidence for one sequence cannot be automatically transferred to another.
Use receptor structures to understand a mechanism, while keeping claims about effects tied to the experiment that measured them.
